Akil’s Story

ABOUT

Akil’s journey began between Trinidad, Brooklyn, and Toronto, shaped by immigration, separation from family, and the resilience of community. Raised in environments that demanded awareness and adaptability, he learned early how culture, mentorship, and shared spaces influence direction and opportunity.

Determined to create his own path, Akil earned a performing arts scholarship and pursued journalism and broadcasting, balancing school with internships, late-night shifts, and early media opportunities. From Toronto’s first hip-hop radio station to helping build the Toronto Raptors’ early digital presence, he carved out a role at the intersection of sport and culture. Over time, he became a trusted voice across the NBA, the Olympics, and international sporting events, known for translating high-level competition into clear, human-centered storytelling.

Beyond broadcasting, Akil’s work is grounded in giving back. Through MediaLit and community-driven initiatives, he mentors youth and emerging creators, equipping them with the tools to navigate today’s media landscape with confidence and intention. His career reflects the belief that sport and storytelling can open doors—and true leadership is measured by the communities we uplift.
